NEC brushes off petition from LI

The National Election Committee (NEC) on Tuesday brushed off concerns over a petition written by former opposition leader Sam Rainsy and supported by UK-based Liberal International (LI).

Issuing a letter saying that lawmakers were chosen through “free and fair elections” as stipulated by the Cambodian Constitution, the NEC added that every party has equal rights when it comes to the polls.

Announcing his intention to seek the LI support in a Facebook post, Rainsy wrote: “LI approved a petition about Cambodia, in which it calls for governments of the world to advocate for the Cambodia National Rescue Party [CNRP], put restrictions on the dictatorship of Hun Sen and not recognise the fake election on July 29”.

The organisation, which claims to be a “federation of liberal political parties”, backed the petition, supporting the court-dissolved CNRP and Cambodia National Rescue Movement.
