Gareth Evans, remember him? Former Australian FM and an architect of the PPA of October 1991? Well, this is the man who had once been considered by Hun Sen as a "friend" and, vice versa is also true, no doubt. After the bloody massacre that was Veng Sreng street shooting of 2014, Evans called the violence "beyond the civilised pale" but his civilised government had - and still has - co-operated with and counted Hun Sen's regime among 'friends' for decades prior and following similair atrocities committed against civilians and Funcinpec officials in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
There is something of a history behind this curious love affair or attraction between such Westerners in high places as well as rabid historians, academics and their inspired followers in the press who dedicate their time and talents to soft-peddling authoritarian regimes and vilifying their unarmed victims peacefully calling for social reforms and democracy.
With ‘friends’ like these…
