Two unidentified gunmen shot the deputy governor of Myanmar’s Central Bank, with some reports on whether she had survived the attack. Than Than Swe, who was selected for the role after the army seized power last year, is believed to be the most military official to be targeted. She was shot by the two men as she opened the door to her apartment in Yangon’s Bahan township, one local official said.
No official responsibility has been taken for the attack, but Myanmar’s anti-coup militias have carried out targeted killings and bombings as well as arson and sabotage of military supply lines. The attack on Than Than Swe comes less than a week after Myanmar’s Central Bank issued a notice ordering the rapid conversion of all foreign currency in the country to Myanmar’s kyat, a move seen as a response to tightening global sanctions against the military authorities.
