US bolsters military activities in South China Sea: Chinese think-tank

Beijing-based research institute warns of determined countermeasures from China.

The American military last year deployed three carrier strike groups, 20 bombers, and 12 nuclear attack submarines in the South China Sea as it apparently intensified its activities in the region, a new Chinese report found.

In its report, the South China Sea Probing Initiative (SCSPI), a Beijing think-tank, accused the United States of politicizing military operations “against China” in the disputed waters.

In 2022, such politicization was “further enhanced, with increased exposure to the Taiwan Strait transit operations, deployment of carrier strike groups, military exercises and drills,” said the publication titled “An Incomplete Report on U.S. Military Activities in the South China Sea in 2022.”

The U.S. military has yet to respond to the SCSPI’s findings.

A total of nine U.S. warships transited the Taiwan Strait last year, according to the report by the state-backed organization. 

“Although the frequency decreased significantly compared with 12 in 2021 and 15 in 2020, the public profile and political significance of the transits have increased,” it said.

Myanmar’s junta-stacked election commission on Tuesday announced Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party would be dissolved for failing to re-register under a tough new military-drafted electoral law, state media said.

The military justified its February 2021 coup with unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud in 2020 elections won by the NLD, ending a 10-year democratic experiment and plunging the country into turmoil.

In January, it gave political parties two months to re-register under a strict new electoral law ahead of fresh polls it has promised to hold but which its opponents say will be neither free nor fair.

Out of 90 existing parties only 50 had applied to re-register under the new rules, state broadcaster MRTV said. The rest would be dissolved from Wednesday.

It stands to reason that unless the core minimum preconditions of a free and fair election are met then there is no point for the international community to dispatch its teams of election observers to the country in July. These conditions include, of course, the reinstatement of the opposition CNRP, releasing imprisoned members of that opposition as well as all political prisoners and those of civil society.

These on-going infringements are all part and parcel of human rights violations perpetrated by the ruling regime against segments of civil and political body of the citizenry and thus under such climate any election held and its outcome will be no more than a formality divested of any ounce of credibility otherwise to be expected as characteristic fulfilment of the democratic process.

The Khmer people can go to the polls, if only to exercise their constitutional right as citizens, but the democratic world community outside should abstain from unwittingly or otherwise granting legitimacy to this one-party regime.    

Khmer people have been through enough over the last half century – they deserve a lot better.

របាយការណ៍​ក្រសួងការងារ​បង្ហាញ​ថា ក្នុងឆ្នាំ​២០២២​កន្លងទៅ យ៉ាងហោចណាស់​មាន​កម្មករនិយោជិត​ក្នុង​វិស័យ​កាត់ដេរ​សរុប​ជាង ៥ម៉ឺន​នាក់ បាន​បាត់បង់​ការងារ​ធ្វើ ខណៈ​រោងចក្រ​សហគ្រាស​ជិត ៥០០ បាន​បិទទ្វារ និង​ព្យួរ​ការងារ។ ដោយឡែក នៅ​ដើម​ឆ្នាំ២០២៣​នេះ មាន​រោងចក្រ​ចំនួន ១០ បាន​បិទទ្វារ ខណៈ​រោងចក្រ​ចំនួន ៧១ បាន​ព្យួរ​កិច្ចសន្យា​ការងារ រីឯ​រោងចក្រ ៦០ ផ្សេងទៀត​បាន​កាត់បន្ថយ​បុគ្គលិក។ ការណ៍​នេះ​កំពុង​ប៉ះពាល់​ដល់​កម្មករនិយោជិត​ប្រមាណ ៣ម៉ឺន២ពាន់​នាក់ រីឯ​កម្មករ​ជាច្រើន​ទៀត​បាន​បាត់បង់​ការងារ​ធ្វើ​ទាំងស្រុង​តែម្តង។ រដ្ឋាភិបាល​អះអាង​ថា បញ្ហា​នេះ​បណ្តាល​មកពី​ការធ្លាក់ចុះ​ការបញ្ជាទិញ​ដោយសារតែ​សង្គ្រាម​ឈ្លានពាន​របស់​រុស្ស៊ី (Russia) នៅ​អ៊ុយក្រែន (Ukraine)។ ក៏ប៉ុន្តែ អ្នកជំនាញ​ថា ការណ៍​នេះ​អាច​បណ្តាលមក​ពី​ការបាត់បង់​ប្រព័ន្ធ​អនុគ្រោះពន្ធ EBA ២០% ៕​

An opposition activist who was jailed after posting comments on Facebook about the government and Cambodia’s constitutional monarch was released on Tuesday after he apologized to Prime Minister Hun Sen and King Norodom Sihamoni.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court released Yim Sinorn after he posted a video and a statement from prison apologizing for last week’s messages about the king.

The messages drew a lot of attention from online commentators, which prompted the court to charge Yim Sinorn with incitement and with insulting the king. He posted a comment on Facebook on Tuesday that he didn’t intend to insult the king.

“I take this occasion to ask for forgiveness from the king and apologize to Samdech Hun Sen publicly with honesty,” Yim Sinorn said.

In his message last week that led to his address, Yim Sinorm wrote: “According to the people at the coffee shop, today we clearly know who is truly the king.”

Wild boars and sophistry

Mr Hun Manet should be asking himself instead why these crooks are able to use his name and that of his father to scam innocents in the first place? Saying that they should be promptly arrested if they broke the law or engaged in illegal schemes without needing his prior knowledge or notice is not going to prevent them from repeating the tricks. Indeed, if the perpetrators feel at liberty to commit such offences, it is simply because they know that the rule of law is non-existent or too weak to intervene on their victims' behalf, and the reality that the rule of personality as is embodied in its absence through the Huns’ Law is all that matters? 

Manet who read economics at Britain's Bristol University and obtained a PhD in it ought to know better. How many fraudsters in England, France or the US have had the same level of success using or have been known to have used such tricks and methods - i.e., claiming to be a close aide to the ruling PM or President of the day? Indeed, the Huns themselves stand above the law and the constitution where their own personal interests are at stake, from forbidding citizens to speak about or investigate matters of national and public concern such as environmental issues or border land encroachments and alleged mapping irregularities.

Lately, Hun Sen himself admitted that if the law governing protected wildlife species were to be implemented, he and his family members would be the first to be prosecuted, and in that case, the law in question must be amended to prevent that happening? Not such good news for the endangered Khmer peacocks and wild boars, then.   

Such sophistry would not wash on better informed minds, let alone one holding a PhD in the social sciences.
