Hong Kong pro-democracy activists Agnes Chow, Joshua Wong, and Ivan Lam were handed prison sentences earlier in December ranging from 7 to 13.5 months for their roles in organizing a protest at a police headquarters during last year’s anti-extradition bill protests. As part of their role in the pro-democracy Demosisto organization, the three activists advocated for democracy, human rights, and universal suffrage in Hong Kong until Demosisto was disbanded in June of 2020 when Beijing’s new national security law took effect.
Samuel Chu, from the US-based Hong Kong Democracy Council, said that "When they plead guilty - it will not be a judgment on their courageous actions, but a judgment against a poisoned Hong Kong judiciary system no longer independent or capable of rendering justice."
