Cambodia launches 3-year action plan for child development
PHNOM PENH, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia launched a three-year action plan for child development on Monday with the aim of providing children better education, healthcare and protection, officials said.
Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An said children are still facing a number of challenges, such as the lack of social, health, education, and protection systems, particularly in rural areas.
"Children, especially vulnerable ones, get affected by all of these issues which create the poverty cycle and prevent the development of human, economic and social capital for the next generation," she said at the launching ceremony. "The three-year action plan for child development aims to mobilize resources to address these issues."
She said the plan would serve as a roadmap for relevant ministries, institutions, development partners and other stakeholders to carry out their programs relevant to child development.
Social Affairs Minister Vong Sauth said the plan aimed at enhancing education quality and healthcare for children, protecting them from violence and hazardous labor, and strengthening laws.
The Southeast Asian country has approximately 5.48 million children below 18 years old, according to government figures.
