PHNOM PENH, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Nhek Bun Chhay, 2nd vice president of Cambodia's royalist Funcinpec Party, walked out of the party on Wednesday in order to establish a new party.

"I, along with my supporters, have decided to form a new party named the National Unity Party," he said at a press conference. "We are preparing documents in order to register the new party at the Ministry of Interior."

Bun Chhay said the new party, which will join the commune election in 2017 and the national election in 2018, still maintains the stance of supporting the monarchy.

His walkout came after a long-standing conflict between him and Funcinpec Party's current president Prince Norodom Ranariddh. In 2006, the party ousted Ranariddh over embezzlement charges following the sale of the party's headquarters.

In January last year, the prince returned to lead the party again at the invitation of then Funcinpec Party's president Princess Norodom Arun Rasmey, his half-sister.

Funcinpec was founded in 1981 by late King Norodom Sihanouk. It was once the country's largest party, but its popularity has gradually vanished due to internal rifts and the party failed to win even a single seat in the 2013 national election. Enditem
