The new visas will be rolled out from 1 September 2016
Cambodia will start to offer new multi-entry tourist visas this week.
Effective 1 September 2016, the country will allow international visitors to purchase visas for one, two or three years. The initiative forms part of the country’s efforts to attract 7.5 million arrivals per year – including two million Chinese visitors – by 2020.
“The government has approved the new policy for multi-entry visas, which international tourists and investors can apply for at the airport for one, two or three years,” the Phnom Penh Post reported Cambodia’s Tourism Minister, Thong Khon, as saying this week. “We will start to implement this on September 1,” he added.
Despite the imminent launch however, details of the visa scheme remain somewhat unclear. Sok Veasna, an official with Cambodia’s Department of Immigration, was reported saying that certain issues still need to be sorted out.
“The conditions of stay and payment fees will vary depending on the agreements [between Cambodia and other countries’ governments],” Veasna told the newspaper. And at present, only Japan has finalised such an agreement, with China and South Korea reported to be applying for the three-year option.
Veasna added that some visa holders may be required to leave Cambodia during their stay, although details of these conditions are yet to be been confirmed.
Visitors will be able to pay for the multiple-entry visas when arriving at Cambodian airports and the price of the visas will differ according to duration and nationality.
At present, travellers from ASEAN countries can visit Cambodia for up to 30 days without a visa, while other nationalities can obtain a 30-day visa-on-arrival at the country’s airports.
