The Ministry of Public Works and Transport yesterday inaugurated a mobile inspection kiosk that will provide automobile inspection services to all 13 provinces in the country that currently do not have an inspection station.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony yesterday, Transport Minister Sun Chanthol said the mobile kiosk – made up of a China-imported automobile inspection machine loaded onto a truck – will allow people living in remote areas to see if their automobiles are up to code “without needing to go as far as before”.
Soon Kimsrun, director of the CMVIC Inspection Company, which runs Cambodia’s inspection stations, said the kiosk is expected to inspect 136 automobiles per day, about half the number of a traditional inspection station.
According to Chan Dara, director-general of the transportation department at the Ministry of Public Works, there are about 530,000 registered automobiles across the country. Personal cars are required to be inspected every two years, while heavy trucks have to be inspected annually.
San Chey, executive director of Affiliated Network for Social Accountability, called it “an appreciated service”.
