The Opposition are being too lenient in this corruption probe - for obvious reasons. As usual, government, department officials are as slippery as eels in passing the buck on to someone else; usually untraceable agents that cannot be called in for questioning! So, discrepancies in millions of dollars in missing state revenue can't be accounted for, but we are asking this rogue government to give up this devastating trade because it yields next to nothing for the country that is made to shed its own flesh and landmass as a price? 

Clearly, what these corruption enquiries have demonstrated is this: a given government frontman/minister is not directly involved with the actual undertakings [in this case, massive sand-dredging activities on the ground and or their logistical contingencies], but only receives whatever documents and reports found in his in-tray at his Phnom Penh office. Therefore, he cannot be expected to explain any reported discrepancies? Yet, the questions that beg asking then would be: who had approved and sanctioned the trade in question in the first place? How long has this business been going on? What audits – if any - has this administration or relevant department carried out to monitor and prevent corruption and foul play from becoming the norm?

Even in similarly corrupt states like Vietnam and China, instances of such scandalous crime and proportion damaging to the society and the nation would have seen someone brought before the firing squad. Not that this writer endorses such measures of punishment, but the point is: someone [not a scapegoat] needs to be answerable before the Khmer people for their criminal activities...
