TOKYO (Reuters) - A centenarian Japanese doctor who saw patients until just months before his death and helped set up the medical systems that have made Japan one of the world's longest-lived nations died on Tuesday at the age of 105.
Born in 1911, a year before the Titanic sank, Shigeaki Hinohara was for decades the director and public face of St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo, so well known as an "international" hospital that it treated luminaries such as Paul McCartney when he fell ill during a 2014 Japanese tour.
He was working at St Luke's as early as 1945, when he treated victims of the World War Two Tokyo firebombing that left vast swathes of the city in ruins.
"From the start of this year his health wasn't so good, but until then he'd drop into the hospital every so often to conduct exams and talk with patients," a hospital spokeswoman said.
An early advocate of healthier living to stave off the ills of ageing, Hinohara in 1954 introduced Japan's so-called "human dry-dock" system of comprehensive annual physical exams, part of the preventive medical system said to contribute to Japan's longevity.
The author of 75 books, including a bestseller on living well penned at 101, Hinohara was also a frequent guest on Japanese television, where he unveiled a lifestyle that included orange juice with olive oil for breakfast and said that energy comes from feeling good, not fixed rules about living.
"We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep," he was quoted as saying.
"I believe we can keep that attitude as adults - it's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime."

Long time ago [5000 years or so] the life span of people were around 500-900 years old. So to die at 100 years old is not smart after all? Save the earth - because she is dying of young age too.
I watched a doc about some Japanese monks who mummufied themselves [whatever that word is can't find to spell correctly]. Their explanation of why they did that was because of a short-cut to Nirvana instead of millions of million times reincarnations needed to reach Nirvana. But the problem is, they never tell us if they did reach Nirvana by their short-cut method.
Bible has the truth how this dying world will be restored and people will able to live long life to the age of 1000 years without a healthcare concern. The reason people are dying young because man wants to be his own god. Well, instead of admitting man's ways are the ways of death man just keep on trying that scientific answer is around the globe [corner]. So if left to his own vice he just keep going in a circle because he believes the earth is a ball.
Man die because of a consequence of violating God's truth. When God made man, he meant for man to live forever. But SIN slayed him. That's right, sin bring forth death. For the wages of sin is DEATH, but the gift of God is eternal life through his Son, Jesus Christ. Why earn wages to die? Yep, every day you are earning wages of sin to die young.
Doesn't it make sense to have life you must trust in someone who defeated death? Bible says in Adam all die. If this is so, it also says in Jesus Christ, all shall be made alive in him. Jesus, is the Second Adam. Since the First Adam failed [violated God's Truth] he must be redeem by the Second Adam, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ paid the penalty for Adam's sin through his own death. Without the blood there is no redemption.
Now the question to you is: do you want to pay for own sin [which is death] or do you want the gift of eternal life by trusting in Jesus Christ? Because there is a Judgement Day set when all the dead from the time of Adam to the last person who is to die will be judged by the Eternal God who created all things. Because things in this world will not continue on as we know it. Everything will revert back to the WAYS God intended to be if Adam didn't sin against his law of sin and death.
