PHNOM PENH, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Wednesday that other parties would replace the main opposition party if it was dissolved after its leader Kem Sokha was charged with treason.
"If the party is dissolved, other five parties will replace it, meaning that the parties in the parliament will increase from the (current) two parties to six parties," he said in a speech during a visit to a garment factory in Phnom Penh suburb.
The prime minister hinted at the possibility of reallocating the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP)'s parliamentary seats to other five parties if it was dissolved.
"This will happen soon," said Hun Sen.
The kingdom's 123-seat parliament is currently comprised of two parties - the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) holding 68 seats and the opposition CNRP possessing 55 seats.
The Cambodian government filed a complaint to the Supreme Court on Oct. 6, requesting the dissolution of the CNRP after its leader Kem Sokha was charged with treason.
