Provinces nationwide – particularly those along the Cambodia-Thailand border – are likely to experience more flooding as a result of a low-pressure system that is expected to bring rain across the country, according to a forecast from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology. The low-pressure system is currently in the South China Sea moving towards the coast of Vietnam, and is expected to make its way to the Philippines. Cambodia will start seeing the effects of the system from Friday through October 22, according to an announcement.
‘Municipalities and many provinces, especially provinces located along the Cambodia-Thailand Border and the Mekong River, might face new flooding,’ the announcement reads. Yem Bunrom, director of Banteay Meanchey province’s Department of Water Resources, said his department has urged people living in Poipet town, especially those in proximity to the Ou’Kaidom Dam, to be extremely cautious as the dam’s water level has risen to 4.75 metres – 0.15 metres above the alert point.
Some 20 homes have already been flooded, as have two border unit outposts. During the first nine months of this year, rainstorms caused six deaths and 50 injuries, while lightning killed 70 people and injured 62, according to the National Committee for Disaster Management.
