These dwellings over super power rivalries and their respective interests run the risk of glossing over some very not-insignificant dynamics shaping Cambodia's foreign policies since the end of the French colonial era, and in so doing all too conveniently giving justification for what has been in reality a syndrome born of defective localised national leadership on the one hand [see Sihanouk and the current Hun Sen administration] and the country's vulnerability in relations to her neighbours, on the other. The strongest defense that any country in Cambodia's position and geographic circumstances can forge for its own survival and security - like a lonely tree in the middle of a vast plain needing strong deep roots to withstand frequent storms - would be to involve all of its small population and the best or most progressive intellectual resources in the actual process of navigating its fate and deciding its own destiny; something that neither Sihanouk's autocracy nor the present regime's blatant steam-rolling over people's will can be said to provide ...
