Cambodia will send the first group of maids to work in Malaysia in early June this year following on an MoU signed between both countries in 2015, the Minister of Labour said on Tuesday after he met with Malaysia’s Minister of Human Resources.
Cambodian Labour Minister Ith Samheng said he had met with the Malaysian minister, Dato’ Sri Richard Riot AnakJaem, three times to discuss the process of recruitment, training and sending the maids to work in safety.
“Today we talked about the procedure of selecting, training and sending our workers and maids to work in Malaysia, and we agreed by setting the date for sending the first group to work in Malaysia on June 1 this year through the new system,” said Mr Samheng.
He added that according to the official numbers lists from Malaysia, there are more than 8,000 Cambodians working legally in Malaysia, both maids and others. This number dropped after Cambodia banned sending workers to Malaysia in 2011.
In October 2011, the Cambodian government imposed a moratorium on its citizens working as domestic helpers in Malaysia due to reports of abuse by employers.
Dato’ Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem, Malaysia’s the Minister of Human Resources, told reporters on Tuesday that under the MoU, foreign workers including those from Cambodia, will be protected.
