A police officer who shot a bystander during a raid on a Phnom Penh cockfighting ring in January was convicted of “unintentional killing” today and received a one-year suspended prison sentence.

Por Senchey district police officer Chorn Vireak was found guilty in the death of Seak Ron, 33, who was struck a bullet while standing on a balcony overlooking the ring. Witnesses at the scene described police firing their weapons haphazardly into the air.

Presiding Municipal Court Judge Ros Piseth announced the verdict after a one-hour hearing.
