When and as long as the nation is in the charge of actual criminals, traitors and murderers no one should expect the freedom of the press and independent journalism to thrive because, obviously, these characters and elements fear truth and transparency as these things inform and educate public opinion more than they fear their mistresses! As Russia's Soviet leader Joseph Stalin had shown, if you have the necessary instruments of power in your hands you could do pretty much what you want: branding your political and civil opponents as traitors, counter-revolutionaries ["colour revolutionaries" in these parts!] etc. and stage show trials for good measure.
By the way, Stalin had once been imprisoned for his role in bank robbery by the pre-revolutionary Russian government, but at least he had done so in the service to his struggling revolutionary party unlike the man and his criminal gangs now running Cambodia.
