Htet, the 30-year-old bodyguard of Myanmar’s ousted State Counsellor
Aung San Suu Kyi, has been sentenced to three years in prison by the
country’s ruling military after being charged with violating police
rules over expressing support for Suu Kyi on social media.
Her
lawyer, Myint Thwin, told the Irrawaddy that she was sent to Yamethin
prison on the same day. She is awaiting trial on a separate charge of
incitement, which could also carry a three-year sentence. Her posts
gained huge notoriety among audiences on social media - as citizens
across the country protested the military’s takeover and annulment of
the Nov. 2020 elections.
Myanmar’s military has reacted
violently to protests, attacking and killing peaceful demonstrators and
arresting anyone perceived to be critical of the regime.
