U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres demanded the release of Myanmar’s imprisoned leader

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres demanded the release of Myanmar’s imprisoned leader Aung San Suu Kyi, his office announced this week, as the ruling military that ousted her government nearly two years ago slapped seven more years on the 77-year-old state counselor.

After being handed a total of 33 years in prison, Guterres said that he was particularly concerned about the most recent sentence handed down by a junta court. The U.N. also called for the release of Myanmar’s imprisoned president, Win Myint.
