It's high time Western governments took actions against Hanoi over its dismal human rights record. It is not only in Vietnam that the Vietnamese Communist Party wields its egregious influence but also in satellite states such as Cambodia and Laos. Without Vietnam's backing and involvement the Hun Sen regime e.g. would not have the same arrogance and callous disregard for human rights and democracy in Cambodia. Further, this unsavoury influence of Vietnam negatively impacts not only human rights and democracy but also economic development as well as the natural environment. Both Laos and Cambodia have seen their forest covers and minerals virtually depleted within the last 40 years of Vietnamese logging and unrelenting commercial exploitation in the name of ‘peace’, ‘stability’, “fraternity” and “development”!

The annual flooding that causes severe damages to crops and livelihoods in much of mainland South East Asia may be a direct consequence of this loss of forest cover and deforestation along with similiar events in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Like everything else, sadly, these governments have tended to pay no more than lip-service over actual civil human rights infringements.
