Phnom Penh – Scams do not only occur in Cambodia; this is not a localized issue but rather a regional problem affecting multiple Southeast Asian nations. Nevertheless, Thai social media has adopted a favourite pastime: deriding Cambodia with the hashtag #Scambodia. The epithet circulates widely, prompting indignation from Cambodian media. However, while Thai netizens engage in mockery, the Chinese government has quietly issued a high-level alert regarding scam risks—not in Phnom Penh, but in Bangkok.

During Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent visit to the Thai capital, the Chinese embassy released an unusually sharp advisory. It stated that "many Chinese nationals were recently lured to areas along the Thai-Myanmar border to take part in criminal activities." Travelers were urged to exercise vigilance. Notably, the alert was issued in Thailand's capital, not Cambodia's.

This distinction carries significant weight. China does not issue such warnings lightly. Wang Yi had just arrived from Cambodia, where he called for the "complete eradication" of scam centres. Yet the public warning was issued on Thai soil. The implication is clear: the scam crisis extends beyond Cambodia. Thailand's own border regions are fuelling the same criminal infrastructure.

Thai authorities acknowledge this reality. Following recent armed clashes along the Cambodian border, Thai officials conceded that scammer networks had financed attacks on Thai soldiers—providing drone launch points, sniper positions, and artillery sites. The Thai military has since seized substantial scam compounds on Thai territory, including the O'Smach complex in Surin province, a sprawling operation valued at an estimated 10 billion baht.

The persistence of the #Scambodia nickname reflects a preference for blame over coordinated action. Thailand points to Cambodia. China points to Thailand's border. Meanwhile, scam operations continue to thrive across the region.
