SINGAPORE: Singapore's leaders on Tuesday (Sep 15) sent congratulatory messages to their Cambodian counterparts to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"Singapore and Cambodia have enjoyed longstanding relations since the days of Your Majesty’s father, the late King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, and Singapore’s first Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew," wrote President Tony Tan Keng Yam in a letter to King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia.

"Today, our countries continue to enjoy excellent and multifaceted relations, which are underpinned by strong bonds of friendship and expanding people-to-people exchanges."

In a separate letter to his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote: "Over the past 50 years, our countries have forged strong and friendly ties. Today, we enjoy a cooperative and multifaceted relationship that has benefited our people."

Both countries established diplomatic relations on Sep 15, 1965, and Dr Tan and Mr Lee noted that Cambodia was one of the first countries to recognise Singapore after it gained independence on Aug 9, 1965. The two leaders also expressed their confidence that cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow.

"I am confident that our bilateral cooperation will continue to grow and deepen for the benefit of our peoples," said Dr Tan.

Added Mr Lee: "I am confident that relations between our two countries will deepen in the years ahead. I look forward to continuing to work with you to strengthen our cooperation bilaterally and within ASEAN."

Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs K Shanmugam also expressed his congratulations to Cambodia.

"Singapore and Cambodia are old friends who enjoy close and warm ties," wrote Mr Shanmugam in his message to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong. "I also look forward to the further collaboration between our two countries in ASEAN as we work towards the establishment of the ASEAN Community later this year and developing a Post-2015 Vision for ASEAN."
