The prison within and without in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam

May be an image of one or more people and text that says "" I am happy because I am free from that small prison, but I return to the large prison. " NGUYEN VAN OAI Vietnamese prisoner of conscience, who was released after serving his second prison sentence 2002"

Nguyen Van Oai returned home to Nghe An on Jan. 19, 2022 after spending five years in prison on charges of "resisting persons on duty" for protests calling for the closing of the Formosa steel plant after it spilled toxic waste that polluted Vietnam’s coastline.

The Catholic activist also said that in the near future, he will prioritize stabilizing his life, but will then continue to pursue personal plans during the next four years of probation.

Arrested in January 2017, Nguyen Van Oai was one of dozens detained in a widespread crackdown following the protests. Among others arrested was Nguyen Van Van, a reporter for Radio Free Asia, who participated in live coverage from the scene of the protests.
