Van Oai returned home to Nghe An on Jan. 19, 2022 after spending five
years in prison on charges of "resisting persons on duty" for protests
calling for the closing of the Formosa steel plant after it spilled
toxic waste that polluted Vietnam’s coastline.
The Catholic
activist also said that in the near future, he will prioritize
stabilizing his life, but will then continue to pursue personal plans
during the next four years of probation.
Arrested in January
2017, Nguyen Van Oai was one of dozens detained in a widespread
crackdown following the protests. Among others arrested was Nguyen Van
Van, a reporter for Radio Free Asia, who participated in live coverage
from the scene of the protests.
