Cambodian fishermen were surprised when they caught something they weren’t expecting - an endangered 13-foot stingray weighing nearly 400 pounds. The fishermen in Stung Treng province accidentally caught the stingray after it swallowed a smaller fish they had hooked.
A team of experts from the U.S-funded Wonders of the Mekong project arrived on the scene to help unhook the fish and safely return it to the river. But the team said the river’s endangered species are at risk from what they called “ghost nets” - leftover fishing nets that sink to the bottom of the river but still entrap fish within them. The Mekong River is home to a diverse number of species, with the enormous stingray being one the region’s rarest.
