Hidetada Fukushima, a doctor and professor of the emergency department of Nara Medical University Hospital, said: “Shinzo Abe was rushed to the hospital at 12:30 pm.” He suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away at 6:03 pm in Japan time.

Abe was speaking at a campaign outside a train station in Nara, east Osaka, when a gunman approached him from behind.

After the incident of 3 gunshots, Abe fell on the ground bleeding. A video posted on social media showed migrants helping Abe, who was lying on the ground losing consciousness.

Abe, 22, was rushed to hospital where local news network reported he suffered a heart attack while walking.

 

 

Japan's NHK TV reported that the suspect was a 21-year-old shooter from Nara has been arrested. NHK TV also reported that the man had served in the Japanese army for three years. NHK TV also confirmed that the gun used in the shooting was most likely self-made.

Abe spoke at a small campaign rally ahead of Japan's senate election. NHK reported that Abe's advertisement plan was released a day ago.

Prime Minister Kishida condemned the barbaric attack, saying it took place during an election, the most important task of Japan's democracy. He declined to comment on whether the shooting was politically motivated. Japanese officials said that the election process will continue.
