Pehirdin Helil, a 78-year-old Uyghur retiree in Ghulja (in Chinese, Yining) county, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s (XUAR) Ili Kazakh (Yili Hasake) Autonomous Prefecture, was quarantined for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on Feb. 5 after he went to the hospital presenting with symptoms from longstanding gastrointestinal issues. He recently told RFA’s Uyghur Service he is in good health and that he believes he was mistakenly quarantined by authorities in the panic surrounding the spread of the virus in the XUAR, which as of Friday has seen 76 people become infected, with three deaths.
RFA: So how was [your alleged illness] discovered? How did you end up in your current situation?
Helil: I’ve had stomach problems for 40 years. One morning I got up and realized that the food [I’d eaten the night before] hadn’t digested. I wasn’t able to go to the doctor because the roads were closed off [for quarantine]. I drank some vinegar to try to deal with the problem on my own, as I’ve often done. Because of that, I had to lie down and my stomach issues got even worse by the afternoon. I went to the hospital in Maza [township]. Then I went to the county hospital to get medicine. They gave me orders to stay in the gastrointestinal ward. After I’d been there for two days, I got a bit of a high fever, and they got suspicious and put me into quarantine [on Feb. 5] … It’s been 15 days.
RFA: So now, are they still keeping you under the suspicion that you’ve contracted the coronavirus?

A Cambodian court has released from prison the mother of a five-month old girl who died while being held with her at a correction facility in the capital Phnom Penh, a rights group said Friday, while an investigation into the incident continues.
Tevy—whose name has been changed to hide her identity—died on Jan. 26 from “pneumonia and severe malnutrition” after sustaining a thigh bone fracture eight days earlier in Correctional Centre 2 (CC2), where her mother was sent for pre-trial detention in mid-2019 for alleged possession of U.S. $2.50 worth of methamphetamine while eight months pregnant.
On Feb. 25, after spending more than eight months in pre-trial detention, the mother was convicted of drug trafficking and handed a punishment of two years in prison, but was released by the presiding judge with a suspended jail term for the remainder of her sentence, the Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) said in a statement.
“The Cambodian Human Rights Committee hopes that the woman who was released today will behave, end her involvement with drugs, and become a good citizen,” the group said.

After a prolonged stand-off with Vietnam, Chinese vessels are again monitoring and harassing energy exploration efforts by another claimant country in the disputed South China Sea, according to a report by a Washington-based think tank. This time it is Malaysia that’s on the receiving end.
A report from the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) revealed that in October 2019 an exploratory vessel, contracted to Malaysian state-owned oil company Petronas, and its offshore supply vessels entered an area of the South China Sea claimed by Vietnam, China, and Malaysia.
In response, China Coast Guard ships identified by AMTI as the Haijing 5202, Haijing 5403, Haijing 5203, and Haijing 5305 patrolled around the Petronas-contracted vessel consistently throughout December and January. They left it alone in early February only after an appearance from the Royal Malaysian Navy and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
But the let-up didn’t last. Using online ship-tracking software, Radio Free Asia has learned that fishing vessels affiliated with China’s People’s Armed Forces Maritime Militia (PAFMM) took their place.

'Houses On The River Will Fall': Cambodia's Sand Mining Threatens Vital Mekong

Some 60 million people rely on Southeast Asia's Mekong River for their sustenance. But the Mekong is under threat.
While China is building dams that sharply reduce the water flow and sediment downstream, other countries along the river share some of the blame.
Cambodia, for instance, is experiencing a building boom that is transforming its capital, Phnom Penh. Sitting at the confluence of the Mekong and the Tonle Sap rivers, the city's low-slung French colonial architecture is being replaced with high-rise apartment buildings, malls and luxury car dealerships. Sand from the Mekong's sediment is key to that construction growth.
"The benefit from sand dredging is both direct and indirect," says Yos Mony Rath, head of the Cambodian government's Mineral Resources Department. "The sand used in the construction industry helps create jobs and grows the economy. And dredging the river helps make it wider and deeper for boat traffic."
Not only that, he says, but "Phnom Penh is lowland and we need to fill it in before we can begin construction and grow the national economy."

At least 200 factories in Cambodia—most of which make garments—are likely to suffer supply chain disruptions associated with the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in China, leaving the jobs of up to 160,000 workers at risk, a labor official said Thursday.
“According to our forecast we’ve anticipated that, in March, at least 200 factories will face raw material shortages, and the worst scenario will see 160,000 workers affected due to the COVID-19 outbreak,” Ministry of Labor spokesman Heng Sour said at a press conference in the capital Phnom Penh.
“However, we also know that factories in China are resuming their operations and the government is working its best through communication with buyers and other governments to make sure that China will prioritize supplying raw materials to Cambodia so that we will only be affected for a short period of time.”
Heng Sour said that the government is working to ensure that Cambodia “is the first country” to receive raw materials for production, particularly for its garment industry—a crucial sector that employs one million people.

A landmark agreement has been reached between Cambodian families forcibly displaced by a sugar company and the ANZ bank who loaned them money, setting a human rights precedent for the global banking sector.
The ANZ Bank has agreed to pay the revenue and interest earned on a loan given to the Phnom Penh Sugar company, after a complaint was filed in 2014 on behalf of 1200 Cambodian families who were forcibly relocated to make way for a sugar plantation in Kampong Speu province in 2011.
According to Equitable Cambodia – one civil society group leading the complaint along with Inclusive Development International (ICI) – the financial package payout will help “alleviate hardships” faced by families who lost their land to the sugar plantation.
Executive director for Equitable Cambodia, Eang Vuthy, told the Globe that after five years of negotiations, they are pleased about the outcome. “This is a very good move and we’re very happy. It is very important that ANZ acknowledge the suffering caused, although not through direct activity, but how it contributed to [the community’s] suffering.”

Responding to reports that Facebook vendor Ven Rachna (also known as Thai Sreyneang) has been charged with offences related to pornography and sent to pre-trial detention, Amnesty International’s Regional Director Nicholas Bequelin said:
“These transparently trumped-up charges are an affront to gender equality and make a mockery of the rule of law. The arbitrary nature of Ven Rachna’s arrest and the discriminatory abuse of her freedom of expression represent a troubling regression in the state of women’s rights in Cambodia.
“At a time when the Cambodian government is boasting of its human rights record this case reveals the cruel reality of repression and discrimination facing many in Cambodia today.
“These charges rest on the abusive misapplication of a law which was supposedly intended to combat human trafficking, but instead is being used to oppress women. Ven Rachna must be released immediately and all charges against her dropped.
Cambodia says 200 factories face production halt from coronavirus

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - About 200 factories making mostly garments will likely suspend operations or slow production next month over a lack of raw materials from China due to supply chain disruptions caused by the new coronavirus, an official said on Thursday.
Labor Ministry spokesman Heng Sour told reporters about 10 factories with about 3,000 workers have already notified the government that they will partially suspend operations.
"From predictions as well as an actual survey about the impact of coronavirus, we know that in March nearly 200 factories will face a lack of raw materials and it will affect about 110,000 workers," Heng Sour said.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has promised tax breaks to garment factories hit by supply chain disruptions and higher tariffs after the European Union withdrew trade preferences over human rights.
He also said the government would help companies pay 60% of lost wages to workers if production is halted.

KAMPONG CHAM, Cambodia — He looks out from the picture, a slight man in a loose shirt, a pen in his pocket, the jungle stretching behind him. The photograph was taken after murders he was accused of committing when the Khmer Rouge swept through this nation decades ago in a reign of fevered killing and mass graves.
No one knows whether the man, Ao An, a former Buddhist monk now in his 80s, will ever face a reckoning on charges that he oversaw the genocide of the Cham ethnic minority during the 1970s. After nearly two decades, $300 million spent and only three convictions, a special United Nations-backed court established to try leaders of the murderous Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia appears to have ground to a halt.
The three remaining cases are stuck in limbo due to opposition from Cambodian court officials and the country’s authoritarian prime minister, Hun Sen, a former Khmer Rouge commander. The Cambodian officials on the hybrid tribunal — which includes judges and lawyers from both Cambodia and overseas — have stonewalled Ao An’s case.

Two nurses working at the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic -- the central Chinese city of Wuhan -- have made a global appeal for assistance on the website of the medical journal, The Lancet.
Zeng Yingchun and Zhen Yan, who hail from the southern province of Guangdong, were among a wave of medical personnel dispatched to the front line of the epidemic at the beginning of the year.
They arrived in the city on Jan. 24 to bolster the ranks of existing medical staff, who were stretched beyond endurance faced with overwhelming numbers of patients and rapidly dwindling supplies.
"The conditions and environment here in Wuhan are more difficult and extreme than we could ever have imagined," the nurses write, citing a severe shortage of protective equipment like N95 respirators, face shields, goggles, gowns, and gloves.

Police in southern Vietnam’s Dong Nai province have launched an investigation of a 63-year-old woman living in Lam Dong province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, accusing her of membership in a U.S.-based opposition organization called a “terrorist group” by authorities in Hanoi.
Tran Thi Hoa, a resident of Lam Dong province’s Da Lat city, is accused of activities aimed at overthrowing Vietnam’s one-party communist state under Article109 of the country’s penal code, the Dong Nai police website reported on Feb. 23, adding that police in Lam Dong have joined them in their investigation.
According to authorities, Tran joined U.S.-based opposition group the Provisional Government of Vietnam in October 2018 and worked to add the names of over 600 residents of Dong Nai’s Long Khanh city to a referendum calling for U.S. citizen Dao Minh Quan to be named president of an interim government replacing the country’s communist leadership.

The North Korean government conducting senior-level meetings by video conference instead of meeting face to face, as fears over the spread of the novel coronavirus reach even high-ranking senior officials in the reclusive country, including Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un himself, sources in the North told RFA.
Pyongyang has yet to publicly acknowledge a confirmed case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but the Central Committee of the Korean Workers’ Party has been holding its high-level meetings via video conference since early February, and has also ordered the military to do the same.
“Due to the recent outbreak of the new coronavirus, the Central Committee’s morning conference has transformed into a video conferencing format,” a Pyongyang official told RFA’s Korean Service.
“The senior level meetings attended by the Highest Dignity every morning have changed to video meetings,” the source said, employing an honorific phrase commonly used to refer to Kim Jong Un.

Vietnam Refuses Entry to Travelers from Parts of South Korea and Other Coronavirus-Affected Countries

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc Tuesday ordered a temporary refusal of entry to all travelers originating from areas affected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), including parts of South Korea, the country with the most confirmed cases outside of China.
As of Tuesday afternoon EST, there were 977 confirmed cases of the deadly virus in South Korea, mostly in the southeastern city of Daegu.
On the prime minister’s orders, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced to the South Korean government, and the governments of other affected countries, that it would be taking preventative measures including the denial of entry to those originating from or traveling through epicenters of local outbreaks.
In addition, those who must enter Vietnam for reasons other than tourism must voluntarily report their health condition and be quarantined for 14 days.

Two townships in northern Myanmar’s Kachin state face shortages of food staples, including rice, and rising prices, after China shut down border checkpoints in an effort to contain its coronavirus outbreak, a local lawmaker said Tuesday.
More than 20,000 residents of Chipwi and Hsawlaw townships will face shortages from now until China opens the border crossings, closed until the annual monsoon season begins in late May, said Khaw Marwu, a legislator from the Lisu National Development Party who represents the Hsawlaw constituency.
The two cold, mountainous regions along with Kawnglanghpu township lie in remote areas that are difficult to access as roads are rare, he said. Residents earn their living by farming, hunting, and selling forestry products.
The Myanmar military and a number of armed groups are present in the region, including the rebel Kachin Independence Army (KIA); the National Democratic Army-Kachin (NDA-K), an armed group that was converted into a Border Guard Force under Myanmar military command; and the Lisu and Rawang militias.

A group of more than 100 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and activist communities in Cambodia expressed dismay Tuesday over the government blocking an annual tree-blessing ceremony at Prey Lang forest in the country’s central plains.
Over the weekend, masked, armed rangers deployed by the Ministry of Environment blocked hundreds of community members, monks, and environmental activists from entering parts of Prey Lang protected area to join a ceremony organized by the Prey Lang Community Network (PLCN) to promote conservation efforts against deforestation.
In a statement on Tuesday, the PLCN said it was “outraged and appalled” at the restrictions on the ceremony, which it has held for several years, and which it notified authorities about in advance.
“In the past, we were able to enter the forest freely to do our activities and protect the forest,” said Houen Sopheap, a PLCN representative in Kampong Thom province.
“But recently, it has become harder and harder, and the ministry has placed more restrictions on our actions.”
Effect on Cambodia’s Garment Industry Uncertain as Suspension of EU Trade Scheme Looms

Workers and factory owners in Cambodia remain uncertain about how the suspension of trade preferences with the European Union will affect the country’s key garment industry, representatives said Tuesday, weeks after the bloc announced an end to tariff-free access to its market.
The EU in mid-February announced plans to suspend tariff-free access to its market under the “Everything But Arms” (EBA) scheme for around one-fifth of Cambodia’s exports, citing rollbacks on democracy and human rights—a decision that would reinstate tariffs on garments and footwear beginning Aug. 12, unless it is overturned by the bloc’s governments or its parliament.
The decision will result in a loss of around U.S. $1.1 billion of the country’s annual U.S. $5.8 billion in exports to the bloc, some 75 percent of which are made up of clothing and textiles—a crucial industry in Cambodia that employs one million people.
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has shrugged off the EU’s move, on Monday pledged to cut taxes for up to a year for garment producers facing new tariffs, while promising that workers will be provided with 60 percent of the current minimum wage for up to six months in the event that production is suspended.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen says he is looking forward to meeting U.S. President Donald Trump in Las Vegas and taking part in a scheduled March 14 US-ASEAN special summit.
The longtime Cambodian leader says he is set to arrive March 12 in Las Vegas, the site of the summit, and remain until March 16, according to a recent speech in the Cambodian capital and posts on his Facebook page. He says 1,000 Cambodian-American supporters will meet him in Las Vegas.
“I want to inform Cambodian people in the US that I will be in Las Vegas on 12 March to join the US-ASEAN Summit and on 13 March, I might play golf in Las Vegas,” Hun Sen said on Facebook, revealing his plans for the U.S. trip.
Kuy Kuong, spokesman of Cambodian Foreign Ministry, confirmed Hun Sen’s attendance at the summit.
“Samdech Techo Prime Minister [Hun Sen] has already responded to President Trump that he will lead delegates to join the summit,” Kuy Kuong told VOA Khmer.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday told reporters that the summit would take place as planned in Las Vegas.

China Jails Hong Kong-based Swedish Bookseller For 10 Years on Spying Charge

A court in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo on Tuesday handed down a 10-year jail term to former Hong Kong bookseller and Swedish national Gui Minhai for "illegally providing intelligence overseas."
"We did not receive any information about this, did not have access to the trial and have not been able to examine the prosecution," Sweden's foreign minister Ann Linde said via her Twitter account.
"The [Swedish] government continues to demand that Gui Minhai be released, as well as access to our citizen to provide consular support," she wrote.
The Ningbo Intermediate People's Court made the announcement in a statement on its website, saying that Gui had pleaded guilty and wouldn't be appealing.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said the case had been "handled according to law" by the Chinese judiciary.
"China is opposed to any foreign countries, organizations or individuals interfering in China's internal affairs and judicial sovereignty," the spokesman said in response to questions about the case.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen has unveiled a suite of measures, including tax cuts, aimed at mitigating the double economic blow of the new coronavirus and looming new European Union tariffs.
In a speech on Monday, the longtime leader said Covid-19 had dealt a blow to the country's tourism and apparel sectors. Cambodia is set for a 60% drop in visitors in February, with Chinese visitors down 90%, he said.
The country's apparel sector, meanwhile, is largely dependent on China for raw materials and is on the verge of running out of stock.
Hun Sen also acknowledged there would be consequences from the EU's decision to partially suspend Cambodia's duty-free access over human rights concerns. Even then, he played down the impact and remained defiant, saying Cambodia would not seek a reversal of the decision, which applies to about 20% of the country's exports to the bloc, or some 1.1 billion euros ($1.19 billion).
"Cambodia will not trade its sovereignty for aid," he said, estimating the impact of the tariffs would be about $100 million. The levies will come into effect in August unless the EU parliament or its member states intervene.

The ruling Chinese Communist Party is cracking down on earlier signs of original news reporting coming out of Wuhan, the central Chinese city worst-hit by the coronavirus epidemic, replacing frontline video on social media with government-approved narratives about brave "heroes" on the front line.
As millions of people remain confined to their homes in central China, the party's powerful Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission has set up shop in Wuhan to take charge of the stories that emerge from that city, in spite of growing public anger over the lack of transparency in the early stages of the epidemic.
President Xi Jinping's right-hand man and party secretary of the commission Chen Yixin was dispatched to the city earlier this month. A directive detailing the sort of "propaganda work" Chen wants to see coming out of Wuhan followed soon after, dated Feb. 18.
With at least two prominent citizen journalists -- Chen Qiushi and Fang Bing -- 'disappeared' or otherwise silenced after they posted grim accounts and video clips of hospitals struggling to cope with the onrush of suspected coronavirus patients, the party is now taking charge of the story, ordering only "positive" coverage from state journalists already trained to sing its praises.
"[We must] step up strategic content planning and innovation ... promote positive energy and foster a climate of public opinion that is conducive to waging an all-out people's war on the epidemic," the directive said.
Dissident Buddhist Monk Thich Quang Do Dies in Vietnam

Thich Quang Do, head of the government-banned Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam and a life-long advocate for democracy and religious freedom in the one-party communist state, died at the age of 93 on Feb. 22 in Ho Chi Minh City, international media and other sources said this week.
A 16-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, he had spent more than three decades in detention or under house arrest for his peaceful advocacy work.
Born in 1928 in Thai Binh province, Thich Quang Do was sent into internal exile in northern Vietnam for 10 years in 1982 for protesting the creation of a state-sponsored Buddhist Church and in 1995 was sentenced to five years in prison for organizing a rescue mission for flood victims in the Mekong Delta.
Released in 1998 due to international pressure, Thich Quang Do was later placed under house arrest at the Thanh Minh Zen Monastery in Ho Chi Minh City, where his communications were strictly monitored and he was denied freedom of movement.
China Postpones Annual Parliament As Coronavirus Spreads in Beijing

The ruling Chinese Communist Party on Monday said an annual meeting of the country's rubber-stamp parliament would be postponed amid the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, which has now seen nearly 80,000 cases confirmed globally, along with more than 2,500 deaths.
This year's annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), which sees nearly 3,000 delegates routinely nod through policies, approves budgets and confirms leadership changes decided in advance, had been scheduled for March 5 in Beijing.
But the NPC standing committee said after a meeting on Monday that it would be "appropriate" to postpone the session because of the epidemic, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The NPC and its sister advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) would usually see thousands of delegates from across China converge on the Great Hall of the People and other Beijing venues over a three-week period, giving ample opportunity for fresh clusters of infection.
The announcement came as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Beijing reached 400, with four deaths reported.

In 2013, scientists captured a wild horseshoe bat in a remote cave in Yunnan province, 1,700km southwest of Wuhan. It was carrying a virus strain almost identical to the form of coronavirus that has infected over 65,000 people since December 2019. The cave, the location of which is kept secret, was found after an intense search across southern China for the origin of the 2003 Sars epidemic.
Now an even more urgent hunt is underway – this time to find the animal source of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, the disease that has killed almost 1,400 people in mainland China and three beyond its borders. Bats, snakes and now pangolins have all been suggested as hosts of the virus that later made its way into humans, but we still don’t know how exactly the virus jumped from animals to humans. But understanding which animal the virus came from could have a profound impact on how we manage future outbreaks.
The search for the source of Sars – which killed more than 770 people two decades ago – has given us a head start for the current hunt. Wearing hazmat suits and equipped with mist nets, a team from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, together with the ecologist and president of EcoHealth Alliance Peter Daszak, ventured into limestone caves to collect faeces and blood samples from thousands of roosting bats before testing them for novel coronaviruses in the lab. “At the time, we were looking for Sars-related viruses, and this one was 20 per cent different,” says Daszak. “We thought it’s interesting, but not high-risk. So we didn’t do anything about it and put it in the freezer.” The group has found around 500 bat-borne viruses in China over the last 16 years, but only flagged those that most resembled Sars to the authorities – a lack of funding meant they couldn’t further investigate the virus strain now known to be 96 per cent genetically similar to the virus that causes Covid-19.

Cambodian PM Offers Tax Breaks to Factories Hit by Coronavirus, EU Tariff Losses

PHNOM PENH — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen promised on Monday to give tax breaks to garment factories hit by supply chain disruptions from the coronavirus epidemic and higher tariffs after the European Union (EU) withdrew trade preferences over human rights.
He also pledged to give hotels and guesthouses a tax exemption for four months to help offset losses to the tourism sector caused by the new coronavirus strain that has killed more than 2,500 people, mostly in China, and spread to about 28 other countries and territories.
Travel restrictions and quarantines in China, the manufacturing engine that powers much of the world, hit movement of goods, with the lack of supplies reverberating throughout the global supply chain.
The disruption is hitting as Cambodia's key garment industry prepares for the loss of about 20% of the trade preferences it enjoys under the "Everything But Arms" (EBA)scheme the EU offers 48 of the world's poorest countries.
The percentage equates to about 1 billion euros ($1.1billion) of exports.

“Land-grabbing, illegal logging and forced evictions have long been common in Cambodia,” Reuters reported,” “but by granting land concessions, the government has effectively legalized these practices in the country’s last remaining wilderness.”
The view while flying over Cambodia from the inland tourist mecca of Siem Reap to the coast is jarring: The national forests that once held Asian tigers, elephants, leopards, bears and other endangered species have been replaced by scarred, deforested industrial landscapes.
And where was the beach paradise I was expecting when I landed? Cambodian coastal cities like Sihanoukville and Kampot may have made The New York Times’ “52 Places to Go” list, but for people who have actually made the trek, it’s a depressing destination strewn with garbage and overrun with construction.
“It’s awful,” Australian tourist Andrew Walker told me. He’d visited Sihanoukville a decade ago and was so taken with it he brought his girlfriend back for a holiday. “But it’s all gone now — just a bunch of casinos, whorehouses and hotels.” He’d quickly escaped to Kep, the former St. Tropez of southeast Asia, which is seeing its historic art deco homes demolished in favor of new-style mansions — but still has some sort of tranquility left.
Much of the demolition is coming via Chinese “investment.” Since 1994, China has injected $17.5 billion into Cambodia — much of which has not trickled down to Cambodians — and locals say the business-friendly term is a euphemism for “China buying us,” a local taxi driver told me. In fact, the “investment” has been the cause of massive displacement and evictions for locals, according to a CNN report.

The latest figures from China suggest that the novel coronavirus outbreak remains worst in the locked down Hubei province, where there were 630 new cases as of Saturday evening and 96 new deaths.
However, the global reach of the outbreak continues to spread, with South Korea announcing on Sunday that it was increasing its national threat level to “red alert,” the highest level, after 169 new cases were confirmed on Sunday.
●The Chinese government reported 648 new cases of the novel coronavirus across the country on Sunday, as well as 97 deaths. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 76,936 with a total of 2,442 deaths from COVID-19.
●At present, three cruise ships have docked in Wuhan to house medical workers to help the city’s overburdened health care system. On Sunday, Wuhan’s Union Jiangbei Hospital announced that a 29-year-old doctor had died of coronavirus, the second death of a young doctor in Hubei in recent days.
● South Korea placed on the highest “red alert” on Sunday after the national tally of the virus spiked to 602, the first time the country has used that national alert setting since the H1N1 swine flu outbreak in 2009.
● Iran has confirmed six deaths related to the coronavirus, the highest outside of China, while South Korea confirmed its fifth death on Sunday.
HONG KONG — The Chinese government announced there had been 648 more confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus outbreak as of late Saturday evening, bringing the total cases in mainland China to 76,936, with 97 more deaths from the outbreak bringing the total up to 2,442 across the nation.
Within China, the outbreak remains worst in Hubei province and its capital city of Wuhan, where the outbreak first emerged in December. The new official figures showed that the vast majority of new cases confirmed across China — 630 — were in the province, while all but one of the new deaths were in Hubei.
